About the partnership between the 9 villages of Jitpurphedi and Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN)
The purpose of the model Community Learning Centre is to ensure the sustainability of the developmental and sustainable programs currently driven by VIN in the Jitpur region. The mission of VIN, an NGO, is to empower marginalised communities, with a focus on women and children, through enhanced educational programs and community training to promote equality, economic wellbeing and basic human rights.
This is such an important mission which, since inception in 2005, is making steady progress. This progress has been possible by the support of international volunteers working alongside the local community. The key focus remains on empowering the community to forge their own, sustainable, path in life.
Major funding is currently being sought from both international grant agencies and companies based in Nepal for the model Community Learning Centre. However the sale of bricks/mortar will give construction a kick-start and completion date goal of December 2012 to become a reality. Just think of the warmth the receiver of your gift will feel, together with a wonderful sense of giving to a disadvantaged population – the poorest nation in Asia and the 10th in the world.
Without your act of kindness the future for these people is bleak with little prospect of being able to develop and live rewarding lives…situations which we take for granted.
Thank you for your gift of hope.
Additional Information
The following information on the endeavours of Volunteers Initiative Nepal supports the request for this donation.
Nepal is a beautiful country that is both geographically and ethnically diverse. It is also one of the poorest and least developed countries in the world, with an estimated 30% of Nepalese living below the poverty line – some 82% of people live on less than US$2 per day.
Being a mostly rural nation there are approximately 85% of the population living in the countryside. It is in these rural communities that development issues such as poor education, health and sanitation are most acutely felt. Gender and social inequality are also part of daily life.
VIN was established to address these issues and help improve the lives of Nepali people primarily through partnerships with international volunteers working alongside the local community.
It is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation which was founded in 2005 by a diverse group drawn from development workers, educationalists, social activists and other professionals. Unlike many other development NGOs, VIN serves to directly put efforts for change in the hands of local people. It actively encourages people to volunteer within their communities, aiming to unite all sectors of society in working together to set up and run local projects.
Note 1 - The main community-based pilot project is located at Jitpur, a rural community surrounded by woods, hills and fields. It lies 11 kilometres from the capital on the outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley near the beautiful Nagarjuna forest reserve. VIN’s main focus is on four key projects. These are:-
